People attack NHPC station:Greater Kashmir

Threaten to snap power export

Srinagar, Aug 12: For the second consecutive day Tuesday, thousands of people from several areas in Uri forced their entry into the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s station at Gingal, demanding immediate stoppage of power supply to outside state.
Reports and eyewitnesses said that more than 5000 people from Gingal, Dwaran and Bijhama areas marched toward the outlet, asking the authorities to stop the power supply to outside or face the consequences.
“The marchers made several attempts to stop the power supply, but the police and paramilitary troopers prevented them,” said Muhammad Ashraf, an eyewitness.
Reports said the protesters gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities to snap all power supply lines to outside. “If the authorities would fail to cut the power supply, we’ll be forced to stop it ourselves,” Ashraf added.
The NHPC presently generates 2400 MWs of power in India and out of it, 1600 MWs is being developed only in Jammu and Kashmir. “If the fanatics in Jammu can enforce blockade to Kashmir, why can’t we retaliate by snapping their power lines?” questioned the protestors. “We will fight the blockade tooth and nail.”
They threatened that on Wednesday they would march towards the power plant and snap the power export amounting to 88 percent of the total production. “We Kashmiris have been getting mere 12 % share while the major portion of power goes outside. The power plant is on our land, it works on our water resources. Why should we allow others, who have left us starving, to use our power?” shouted the people.
